History of Basketball

Dr. James Naismith

(November 6,1861- November 26, 1936)

The game of basketball a was created by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield Massachusetts to physically condition young athletes during cold winter months.

 

 

He used two peach baskets for hoops and then use a soccer ball as a basketball. Dr. Naismith secured the peach basket on the inside of the railing of the gallery. The basket was about 10 feet from the floor, on each end of the gym. Dr. Naismith also wrote some rules that are still use in today. Today there are nine rules. The first game that ever played, "consisted of 18 players, or nine to a team which was standard to the baseball teams of the day." The first person to score in a basketball games was William R. Chase. The name of "basketball" was originated in the first game. "In addition to the creation of the basketball, James Naismith graduated as a medical doctor, primarily interested in sports physiology and what we would today call sports science and as Presbyterian minister, with a keen interest in philosophy and clean living. " Naismith watched his sport, basketball, introduced in many nations by the YMCA movement as early as 1893.
